This design came about from a few hours when I was just messing around with checkerboards. There's a very pronounced compass rose in the reflection pattern, which gets exaggerated in low RIs. I like this in reddish tourmaline, but works in materials from feldspar to YAG (RI = 1.52 - 1.83) with no changes. Suggested size = 5-10 mm
